In medical manufacturing, the question usually comes down to: "Can you make it smaller?" This applies to molded and machined parts. For medical tubing manufacturers, a variation on this theme is: "How thin can you squeeze?" Zeus Industrial Products Inc. has a new answer, at least for PTFE catheter linings: wall thicknesses as low as 0.0004 Inches (0.0102 mm) with a tolerance of +/- 0.0002 inches (0.0051 mm)? The company claims that it is the thinnest extruded liner available, the size is about the same as the film cast tube, but the strength is higher.

The Advanced Polymer Precision Extruder in Orangeburg, South Carolina uses a proprietary process to extend its StreamLiner series of thin extruded PTFE conduit liners. "The new StreamLiner OTW series opens up new possibilities for catheter manufacturers," said Bob Chaney, senior vice president of global sales and marketing. "Currently, no other polymer solution provider can provide extruded PTFE liners with comparable wall thickness, flexibility and strength." Zeus said the technology enables medical device manufacturers to develop safer, smoother and stronger These catheters can penetrate deep into the patient’s vasculature.

In addition to achieving wall thickness and flexibility comparable to film cast PTFE liners, the StreamLiner OTW product portfolio also shortens lead times and speeds time to market due to Zeus' internal wire drawing capabilities. The production process has also been simplified: Zeus provides straight, fixed-length linings that allow products to shuttle from packaging to production, eliminating multiple timely processes, Zeus said.

Specific catheter applications for the StreamLiner OTW series include occlusion balloon catheters, micro catheters, mechanical and aspiration thrombectomy catheters, intermediate catheters, guide catheters with and without balloons, and support catheters.
